The Philosophy of Majic

The thinking behind Majic is to address the need to provide rich application logic to resource-limited devices such as smartphones, wireless PDAs and in-car systems. Such devices are limited in terms of battery power, CPU power, memory size and storage capacity.

Additionally, the wireless networks upon which these devices depend are limited in both bandwidth and reliability, impeding rich software from being deployed to the device in a robust, efficient and timely manner. This results in a smart wireless device being dependent upon a desktop PC for robust software provision and system updates, which is at odds to the concept of a roaming wireless device.

Building a better world

Majic!

The Majic philosophy is that applications should be deployed to the device directly from the network using a component-based approach. This allows an application to be built as a coherent collection of ‘molecular’ units of functionality. Additionally, such molecules are indexed and categorised in a central store from which they are delivered to the calling device.

The molecular approach enables fine-grained control over the availability of specific application functionality, on a server-wide, user-specific, location-specific or time-specific basis. This approach gives vendors full control over the access and distribution of their mobile applications.

The molecular approach also enables a data-centric approach to application design, as opposed to standard logic-centric practices, allowing much greater flexibility in dynamically and infinitely extending the functionality of the application - while it is being used, and in real-time.
